The city council has given an assurance the region’s only velodrome will stay. It comes on the back of concern from people who use the track. They emailed Western News with their concerns (see page 8). The city council’s head of recreation and sport John Filsell has reassured the velodrome will not be lost to make way for the new facility. “We have run modelling on a variety of possible scenarios. They all consider the velodrome to be a permanent fixture,â€? he said. The three options the city council is looking at for the new Hornby library, service centre and south-west pool is Denton Park, Kyle Park and Warren Park. In December, Western News reported the facility would be located along the fenceline near McDonald’s if Denton Park was decided on as the chosen site. „„ By Bridget Rutherford VICKI BUCK has labelled her fellow city councillors’ attempts to delay the Hornby mega-facility as “revolting.� On Thursday, the city council decided it would consult with the community on where to build the new Hornby library, service centre and south-west pool facility. But some city councillors raised concerns the proposed $34 million Hornby megafacility is too expensive. At the meeting, Cr Buck (right) said any suggestion to delay the mega-facility was “revolting.� But she later told Western News she was fine with the debate and is pleased the project was going ahead. She said the vote of 15-2 in favour of the facility was “overwhelming.� “Part of the point of the city council is you have robust debate about things. GREAT TO see local city councillor Vicki Buck fighting the good fight for the west. She pulled no punches when fellow councillors Aaron Keown and Mike Davidson tried to throw a spanner in the works last week. Keown and Davidson, who are not in the local ward, say the $34 million cost of the Hornby megafacility is too much. It’s expensive fellas, but the west is the fastest growing area in the city and it has been without a decent facility for many, many decades. So good on you Vicki – who grew up as an eastside girl – for standing up for your westie constituents. On a sporting note the Crosbie Nines at the weekend were a great success (see page 13). The Linwood Keas won it and look dangerous again for the premiership. Where’s the Hornby and Halswell of old? –Barry Clarke

Kennedys Bush asbestos site
CONTENTIOUS: Material containing asbestos has been moved to a site on 318 Kennedys Bush Rd. crete from the February 22, 2011, earthquake was stockpiled on the site before it was discovered the material contained asbestos. In a city council report commissioners Ken Lawn and Bob Nixon said that they had no alternative but to accept that the application is processed on a non-notified basis. This was due to a number of factors including the site already containing asbestos and the movement being tightly
controlled under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act. Precautions included the asbestos being double bagged in sealed polythene bags before being transferred to the site. An Environment Canterbury resource consent said the volume of contaminated material is limited to 4,517 cubic metres. But MP for the Port Hills Ruth Dyson said it would have been far more respectful to tell the residents.

“Bringing into an area some material we know has got some horrific consequences if inhaled - you can understand how upset and frustrated the local people are,” she said. She will be meeting with the Kennedys Bush Road Neighbourhood Association to discuss the issue. But Halswell councillor Anne Galloway said she was comfortable for the decision to be nonnotified. She said the public needed to trust the extensive process the city council has put into ensuring the dump is safe. “The commissioner concluded there would be no adverse affect,” she said. Nearby resident Jan Walker said it was not right that it didn’t go through a proper consenting process allowing people to make submissions. She along with other residents first learnt of the dump before Christmas, when the trucks transporting the material began to go past her house. OAKHAMPTON RESERVE The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will look to approve an easement over Oakhampton Reserve today, after a request from Orion New Zealand. This will be to allow a modern electrical kiosk, which will assist the local electrical network. The easement is for conveying electricity in a area totalling 5.5m2. The topic will be discussed at the community board meeting at the Upper Riccarton Library.

The decision to dump asbestos from a north-west suburb onto a site at 318 Kennedys Bush Rd was made with no consultation with residents close by. It was given the green-light to go ahead by the city council and Environment Canterbury. Halswell Residents’ Association secretary David Hawke said that sort of consent has an “enormous impact” not just for the immediate neighbours but for the whole of Halswell and is astonished the city council could think it is not contentious. “We are getting other suburb’s rubbish and it doesn’t belong here,” Mr Hawke said. The site is located about 400m from the closest residential area. The application was made by owners of the site Penley Ltd last year to transfer the contaminated materials including asbestos from the former Aorangi School in Bryndwr. It comes after crushed con-

News Retirement village takes top award By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A WET summer has proven to be a bumper crop of goodness for gardener Sonya Corbett. Blooming with colourful bursts of petunias, lobelias, impatiens and salvias - the garden at the Lady Wigram Retirement Village was recognised in a citywide competition. Lady Wigram, owned by Golden Healthcare Group, won two awards in the Christchurch Beautifying Association Garden Summer competition. The garden was awarded both the Peter Lawrence Challenge Trophy and the AA Lawrence Memorial Trophy premier award in the commercial category of the competition. Mrs Corbett says the garden’s success is down to the consistent rain. “Considering it has been a little bit cooler the gardens have done really well,” she said. She said this summer has been a good season with the ground only beginning to dry out now, when it normally happens in the beginning of January. Often gardening for more than eight hours a day, Mrs Corbett’s role as head gardener at Golden Healthcare Group requires her

And each new season requires the old flowers to be removed and replaced with the new. “The flowers that we won the competition for, they will get pulled out in April and we start the process over again putting the new lot in for the spring,” Mrs Corbett said.
Her crew, Alf Schinkelshoek, Keely Gwatkin, Sarah Barr, Kenny Stewart and Mike Akehurst, are also responsible for the successful garden. Before taking over at Golden Healthcare Group, she maintained the gardens at Coupland’s Bakeries in Hornby for 15 years. “I love being outside and I love colour. I love working with the annuals because it is colour and you get to be a little bit creative,” Mrs Corbett said. When she is not busy looking after five gardens, Mrs Corbett
enjoys horse-riding and studies a psychology-based horsemanship programme with Parelli Natural Horsemanship.

Controversial funeral home gets hearing By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A HEARING will be held tomorrow for a contentious funeral facility to be built in Halswell. It comes after Lamb & Hayward lodged a resource consent application to build a new funeral facility at 286 Halswell Junction Rd. Since then, the city council has received seven submissions after a limited number of residents were notified of the application. Five oppose the facility while two are in partial support. All submitters will speak at the hearing. Lamb & Hayward has engaged a number of experts to present

at the hearing, including an architect, landscaper, transport consultant and solicitor. The city council will also speak, with representation from a transport network planner and solicitor. The proposed facility has caused outrage, with a petition opposing the facility signed by more than 500 residents presented to the city council’s resource consents unit chief planner Odette White. In 2015, the velodrome received funding from Sky Television as part of its $1 million, five-year commitment to help repair the city after the February 22, 2011, earthquake. Along with $150,000 invested by city council, the funding saw the upgrade of the velodrome’s lighting, the cycle track, changing room facilities and the track rail replacement. But Mr Buckner said there was concern over the lack of parking at the velodrome, which has been reduced since the development of The Hub Hornby. “Our concern is for the likelihood of having a good, well thought out access to the velo-
drome with suitable parking for everybody,” he said. In the letters, concern has been raised over the affect a facility in Denton Park could have on the already congested car-parking area. Mr Filsell said higher level modelling has identified Denton Park, along with the other location options, is capable of accommodating sufficient parking. “One of the many tasks of the project team will be to work with
all the existing users of whatever site is chosen to minimise any potentially negative effects,” he said. Residents will have the opportunity to have their say on where they want the facility to go in the coming months. how we build this and how we can make it affordable.” Councillor Pauline Cotter said she was concerned about the operational costs in the future. The consultation would be prepared by city council staff before coming back to the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board within the next month for
approval. Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the facility needed to be in a good location and easy to get to. The location and concept designs for the facility are not likely to be known until the end of the year. The project is not expected to be completed until mid-2019 or later. •Letters, page 8

St Barnabas ready to reopen By Julia Evans ST BARNABAS will reopen its doors on Sunday – almost six years after it was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. The iconic Fendalton Rd church has undergone $2 million in repairs. It will be celebrating the opening at 10am on Sunday, February 19, just before the six-year an-
niversary of the quake. St Barnabas vicar Mark Chamberlain said most church members have not yet been inside the church. Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch, Victoria Matthews, will speak at the opening service. A special choir of church members and others around the city will sing
at the opening. Items, such as the church’s bible, baptism jug and music books, which were removed from the church at the time of the earthquake, have been returned. Rev Chamberlain said the returning items were “symbolic” of the church’s opening. The repairs involved earthquake strengthening and
repairing stonework and the stained glass windows. The strengthening has brought the church up to at least 67 per cent of the new building standard. Extensive fundraising to pay for the work was done by the church congregation, which had been using the adjacent hall since St Barnabas closed.
St Barnabas was originally built as a memorial church honouring those who died in World War 1. It has been home to many influential Christchurch figures through its long history, including vicar and broadcaster Canon Bob Lowe and vicar Michael Underhill who went on to become dean of Christchurch.

Your Local Views Readers respond to last week’s article on the Hornby mega facility’s location Martin Jones – As a member of the Canterbury Track Cycling Club, I am writing to show my support to keep the Denton Oval facility. This may be an old and, some would say, out-dated track but it is the only velodrome in the city and has, over the years, produced many world class and Olympic cyclists and continues to do so. Each year our development programme grows in numbers as more and more people discover the joy of cycling in a traffic free environment, not only from the younger generation but also masters. Canterbury continues to punch above its weight when it comes to national championships and, if we lose this track, all the hard work that the riders, coaches and army of volunteers will be for nothing. We need this track or a replacement to continue our rise to be the strongest province in New Zealand. We should have a centre of excellence combined with rowing in the city. Ruth Kellow – It would be a tragedy to get rid of Denton Park to build yet another swimming pool. There are already countless pools available to the Christchurch community. However, there is only one track cycling facility in the city. Track cycling has a huge bearing on not only the cycling community, but on the local community also. Denton Park development track cycling is one of the best development programmes in the country, and without this facility, we would lose our ability to produce some of the top riders in the country and indeed the world. What will happen to all the assets and time and effort that has been put into the club? Our two daughters this year tried track cycling and gave the development programme a go. They have fallen in love with the sport through the dedication of the officials and coaches at the club and the family feel to the club. Everyone is made to feel welcome and feel part of a real community. If there is no
velodrome, then track cycling will have no place to go and there will be no Canterbury representatives. This will leave just two velodromes in the country of note, one being Cambridge and the other, Invercargill. In my opinion, we should be investing in track cycling, not another swimming pool. This would be such a huge mistake from the city council’s perspective if it was to go ahead with this plan. I can’t put into words how much this proposal saddens me and I genuinely can’t understand how this has become a site that has been shortlisted for such a scheme. Steven Fish – Development of Denton Park must not result in the loss of the velodrome. The velodrome is frequently used by all grades of cyclists. It has been the nurturing ground for many high performance cyclists since the 1970s. The city council need to realise that there is no other facility in the city for the specific discipline of track cycle racing, but there are several libraries and pools. Please ensure that a velodrome is preserved in the planning of any new facility. Hamish Ferguson – I first rode the track at Denton Park in 1984 and, apart from a short break, I have raced, coached and officiated there ever since. Cycling is my life and track cycling is one of my great passions, as I
eas around The Hub Hornby and the velodrome. Demolishing the velodrome to make space would be a terrible action, as it has huge value to the cycling community. Denton Park currently has the only fully banked velodrome north of Mosgiel in the South Island, and holds regular racing throughout the late spring and summer. It is also a vital training venue for the competitive track cyclists of the region. Placing the facility at Denton Park would be a huge blow to the local cycling community, as well as the Hornby Rugby Football Club. With the suggested alternatives Warren and Kyle parks not causing such damage to sporting communities, I would suggest that either of these or further options be explored.

Now, as my tenure at Denton Park stretches 30 years, I am seeing generations of track cyclists competing. I have seen young kids who have become Olympians and world champions and people like two-time world champion and Olympic silver medallist, Eddie Dawkins, go out of his way to come here and race. Track cycling is a huge part of the Canterbury cycling community. We welcome everyone and do our best to provide good competition for all. Our track cycling junior development programme has been the starting place for four world champions and, most recently, teenage Olympian Olivia Podmore.
Annie Maillard – The Denton Park velodrome is the only track cycling facility in the city, and only one of two in the South Island. It is a fantastic facility, not flash or showy. And it is a community facility, down to earth, practical, well-used and a facility which has produced worldwide renowned cyclists. Why deprive the future cycling heroes and heroines for yet another swimming pool? Track cycling is a strength in New Zealand in spite of the current disappointing lack of coverage or interest shown by the city council. Please can the cycling future of New Zealand be given a chance and the lifeline that Denton Park be protected. If anything, the city council should be looking at how it can invest and improve this amazing place, enhance it not destroy it.
Liam Taylor – Denton Park should not be chosen as the site for the proposed facility, due to the fact that it would seriously impact the usage of the sports facilities, particularly the Denton Park velodrome. Situating the facility at Denton Park, even if it did not involve using the velodrome land, would result in the loss of several sports fields, which are ideal for year round use. This scenario would also involve a great increase in traffic to already crowded car-parking ar-
Peter Rickard-Green – Here’s a story for you about a little girl called Lucy. During 2016, watching the Rio Olympics, Lucy, 10, saw track cycling for the first time. She had never seen a sport like this before that was clearly non-gender-biased, and watched in awe as Great Britain won multiple medals and New Zealand, once again, punched above its weight. She watched as Cantabrian Olivia Podmore raced around the track, and dreamed of one day riding for
the New Zealand team. When she learned that there was a track in Christchurch, she immediately insisted on going to see it. Well before she had ever been on a track bike, and just before the season started, she volunteered to help sweep off the leaves. When the time came to have a go herself, the Canterbury Track Cycling Cub welcomed her with open arms. Offering her clothing, bike shoes, a helmet and a bike for the season to get her started in the sport. Being the youngest rider there, Lucy was often the last over the line, but undeterred, even by a big crash, she prevailed and is now improving every week, with her eyes on future gold medals who knows where she will end up. All of this was made possible by the humble old track in Denton Park. Nothing fancy, nothing flash, but such an important place to breed future champions, born out of true grit and determination to make the best of what we have. That’s the spirit of the Denton Park velodrome right there. The city council’s head of recreation and sport John Filsell responded to readers concerns about the loss of the Denton Park velodrome The velodrome will not be lost to make way for the new facility. We have run modelling on a variety of possible scenarios. They all consider the velodrome to be a permanent fixture. Higher level modelling has identified that Denton Park, Kyle Park and Warren Park are capable of accommodating sufficient parking. Any site chosen by the city council for the new facility/ facilities will impact on those who already use it. If the chosen site is Denton Park, this will include users of the velodrome. One of the many tasks of the project team will be to work with all the existing users of whatever site is chosen to minimise any potentially negative effects and focus on how all stakeholders can work together to bring a fantastic community facility to Hornby.

THE NEW head students for Middleton Grange School have been labelled as young people of the highest integrity and dependability. Year 13 students Makameone Malua and Holly Broom were named head boy and head girl of the school. Head of senior college Ruth Velluppillai said they were popular choices with both the school’s staff and students for the role. “Both enter the role with a reputation as young people of the
highest integrity and dependability,” she said. Makameone’s passions are first for food, followed by his love of rugby and family. Holly on the other hand is an outdoor enthusiast partaking in the outdoor pursuit challenge with the Hillary Outdoors Education Centres and plays netball. Clinton to meet NBA stars
SPORTS Burnside pair in NZ bowls development squad BURNSIDE’S CAIT Bassett and Richard Hocking are both in the New Zealand bowls development squad for 2017. The pair are the only Cantabrians selected for the 14-strong squad, which was named following last month’s national open championships. From this squad, a 10-person team will be selected for June’s series against Australia on the Gold Coast. Bassett was runner-up to fellow squad member Ashleigh Jeffcoat, of Waikato, in the national under-21 championships. Hocking is joined in the men’s team by the likes of 16-year-old Seamus Curtin, of Wellington, who was a singles silver medallist at the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games and is the current under-18 national champion. The upcoming under-18 and under-21 championships now take on added importance as they will certainly influence the selectors thoughts when naming the 10-strong squad for the Gold Coast.

Clinton, 18, won a spot at the Basketball Without Borders global event after he was named the all-star game MVP at the BWB Asia camp in Melbourne last year. “It will be a step up from Melbourne because it’s now the best guys in the world. It will be really cool to see how I match up against guys my age from different countries,” said Clinton. The former Christchurch Boys’ High School student will also get to experience the NBA All-Star game, which the BWB camp coincides with. “It’s going to be pretty special seeing all of those guys, who are the best in the world essentially. I’ll be like a kid in a candy shop,” said Clinton. The guard will get to see the likes of LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant in action in Sunday’s all star game as well as the three-point contest and dunk contest on Saturday. He will be one of two Kiwis at the camp, joined by Wellington’s Taane Samuel.
“I’m really looking forward to this experience. It’s going to be great for Taane and I to represent our country together and help promote New Zealand basketball on the world stage. I’m keen to learn as much as I can from the NBA coaches and players, and get an insight into what it means to play at this higher level,” said Clinton. In December, Clinton played a crucial role in New Zealand’s 57-51 win over Australia in the final of the under-18 FIBA Oceania Championship, which saw them qualify for the inder-19 World Championship in Egypt in July. Clinton, the Junior Tall Blacks captain, top scored for New Zealand in the final with 14 points. After a much-deserved break over the Christmas period, Clinton is now fully focused on preparing himself for the upcoming NBL season with the Canterbury Rams. He is currently training every day of the week ahead of the season opener on March 19. Following the NBL season, Clinton will move to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in August to begin his basketball scholarship at the University of New Mexico.

Three more reasons for a game of tennis in Hornby By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THREE TENNIS courts which are more than 40 years old will finally get a spruce up. The Hornby Tennis Club has secured funding to fix its tennis courts at the Hornby Domain. The courts will be resurfaced by Fulton Hogan. Preparations for the repair work began last week, but the resurfacing will not start until next month. Club junior organiser Paul Lancaster said the courts will look “pretty snazzy” and hopefully it would bring more members into the club. “We haven’t recovered from the earthquakes. We used to have about six primary and five high school teams and now we are down to just one team,” Mr Lancaster said. As well as the upgrade, nearly 70m of fencing between the tennis courts and the adjacent Hornby Domain Bowling Club will also be fixed. Formerly known as the Paparua Lawn Tennis Association, the club has been running for more than 100 years. It caters for all ages with primary, high school and senior divisions, and the club will often

you have got the chance to play for Canterbury country tennis,” he said. Mr Lancaster said he could not say where the funding for the court upgrade had been sourced from because he did not want to jeopardise the project, but it came from a local gaming establishment.
LINWOOD Keas took the spoils at the annual Crosbie Nines on Saturday. The tournament, hosted by the Riccarton Knights at Crosbie Park, is now in its third year and was played in perfect conditions. The 16-team tournament featured some of the South Island’s top clubs, as well as teams put together specifically for the tournament. “It was a great day, the first game was at nine in the morning and the final finished up just before six. The tournament’s great for bringing everyone together. We had nearly all the premiership teams there and some outof-town teams from Nelson and Timaru,” said former Kinghts president, Tony Grenfell. The Keas went unbeaten through pool play before going
on to defeat the Hornby Panthers 17-12 in the grand-final. “It was really pleasing after a long day. It’s tough to get through six games but the boys dug deep and got the result we wanted,” said Keas coach Andrew Auimatagi. The plate competition was won by the Bro XIII club which defeated Hamo Boyz in their final. Crosbie Park saw a large turnout from club supporters and Grenfell felt the tournament was becoming more popular each year. “It was quite a big punt to begin with; we kind of went in blind but we were overwhelmed with how well it went,” he said. “The second year went even better and now we’re able to fine tune things a little bit to help improve the tournament each year.”

Dog rescue charity in need of new wheels By Bridget Rutherford CHRISTCHURCH Bull Breed Rescue has been offered a free vehicle for six months while it fundraises to buy its own. The Woolston charitable organisation which rescues and re-homes bull-breed dogs is raising money to buy a new vehicle. Founder Abbey van der Plas said volunteers had been using her own car – but it had recently broken down. “Because I’m a volunteer,
I just don’t have the funds to repair it or replace it,” she said. Cars Under $7990 owner Hamish Cross has offered the organisation a Toyota station wagon for six months until it had raised enough money to buy its own. “That’s an amazingly generous offer. He is a really big fan of what we do.” Ms van der Plas said the offer gave her more time to raise the $10,000 needed to buy either a van or double
cab ute, and modify it so it could carry dogs securely. She said they used a vehicle everyday, whether it be picking up dogs, dropping them off at the vet, or taking food or supplies to the foster families. Progress counts in maths class If you’re a parent of school-aged children, chances are that there is a subject they just don’t like. And for many kids, that subject is maths. Like many parents, Dale and Kirsty found that their daughter Sayler, 8, just didn’t understand maths and it was proving difficult to keep up at school. So, Dale and Kirsty decided it was time to give Sayler that extra help she needed and enrolled her in the Kumon Maths Programme at their local centre in Fendalton. It was during the August Free Trial, and so they decided to see if their older son Zach might enjoy Kumon Maths also. Six months later and both children are still doing daily worksheets with Kumon. Maths is now one of Zach’s favourite subjects and Sayler has demonstrated a real motivation for improving in her studies. That Kumon worksheets are timed makes this easy for Sayler to see, ‘She is really keen to beat her time. I think having those little goals certainly help’ said Dale. A sense of achievement can go a long way when it comes to engaging with maths. ‘Everyone likes it when they have success, don’t they? Being able to see that progress is great’ said Kirsty. ‘Kumon focuses on maths skills - exclusively and expertly’ said Marette Wells who runs the Kumon Fendalton Education Centre. ‘The ability of the student does not matter; Kumon brings confidence as they grow into their potential’. ON the former site of the Bower Hotel in New Brighton stands the Urban Corner Cafe (alongside with e Bower), which is one of the most eclectic establishments in the city. Urban Corner is uniquely Christchurch in that it’s constructed of 18 shipping containers. It’s a standout on the landscape, situated near the residential red zone and overlooking the Avon River. Upon setting foot inside this spacious establishment, you immediately forget about its modular construction methods. With its warm and family-friendly vibe, Urban Corner has become a community hub for New Brighton locals. e restaurant serves up brunch, lunch and dinner on a daily basis. Menu items are seasonal and the Pork Belly Burger served with coleslaw and cranberry sauce is a must-try for summer. ere’s also a kids menu and a playground outside, catering to mums looking for a place to bring the little ones for a play date. ere’s Farmyard Animal Day with pony rides on the last Sunday of every month in summer, weather permitting, which includes a Llama with a bad haircut and ponies of all sizes. well, ‘Stitch n Bitch’ is hosted by a local artists and is every second Monday. It’s an excellent spot to discover new Kiwi artists and local talent. e dining room is adorned with brightly-coloured kitschy decor. You can purchase any of the art that lines the walls of this establishment. You’re sure to get a laugh out of some of the quirky tongue-in-cheek posters and signage. Sharing the premises with e Bower proves advantageous as Urban Corner features an extensive beer and wine list without the central-city price tag. e Friday menu comes with a $20 price tag, there is always events and special deals - including Wednesday and ursday feed the family of four for $50. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for even more stellar specials. If you are looking for a takeaway, there is a full range of cabinet available too. A little bit different from your traditional cafe and bar, this friendly place is sure to delight.
